Here is some helpful information about our procedures and policies. If you have any questions please let me know and I can add it to our ABC handbook.
A
Attendance- Class begins at 8:00 a.m. Students are considered tardy after 8:00
a.m. and need to sign in at the office and receive a tardy slip.
Absences- Please notify the office when your child will be absent and send a note when your child returns. Contact me more information about missed assignments.
B Birthdays- Your child's birthday is a special day! If you are interested in bringing in a treat for the class please let me know at least 2 days prior so that we can make adjustments.
Book bags- Ensure that your child has his/her book bag daily. Please check their bags daily and especially on Thursdays.
Breakfast- Breakfast begins at 7:30 and students will be sent to their homerooms at 7:50 a.m.
C Communication- Communication between home and school is important to your child's success. You can get in touch with me through email, phone and very soon our class website. Be sure to keep your contact information up to date in the office and with me.
Conferences- I am available for conferencing throughout the year as well as during mandatory times such as progress and report card times. If you are in need of a conference before those times, indicate that on the homework cover sheet with your availability.
CAFÉ-CAFÉ is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy. Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary. CAFÉ will be a part of our literacy block, and includes different strategies to help students improve as readers.
CRCT- Statewide assessments your child will take in April in reading, mathematics, science and social studies. In order to be promoted to the next grade, your child must pass the reading portion of the CRCT.
D Daily Five- The Daily Five is how our students will practice reading, writing and other important literacy skills throughout the day. The Daily Five
Discipline- Student behavior will be monitored through Class Dojo and receive positive/negative points based on behavior. Points given by the classroom teacher, other teachers, and the principals will be used to determine a students’ participation in either Activity Day or reflection.
E Early Dismissal- If you intend on picking up your child any earlier than 2:30 please send me a note and notify the front office.
F Field Trips- In the event of field trips parent volunteers are always welcome. Be sure to sign permission slips and indicate if you are willing to volunteer and join us on field trips.
G Grades- Students will be graded for classwork and participation, assessments, projects, and homework. The grading scale is as follows:
100-90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
69 or below F
H Homework- Your third grader will have homework on a weekly basis. Homework packets will come home on Monday along with a reading log. Homework cover sheets are to be reviewed and signed for a homework grade. Complete packets will be graded and returned on Fridays. Homework is worth 10 pts. per week
Humphries Express- This folder will come home on Thursdays. The Humphries Express folder is a clear folder that will contain important papers from me as well as school wide papers. Many of the items in the Humphries Express will need to be signed and returned. I will also include the graded work folder.
I Illness- In the event that your child is ill please notify me so that I can set aside missed assignments. Of course in this event also notify the front office.
J Just Right Book- This year your student will spend a lot of time learning how to choose a just right book. A just right book is a book that a student can read independently and will require strategy use to figure out certain words. If a child is unable to read 5 words on a page, then that book is not “just right” for them.
K Kindness- All students in Ms. Stroy’s class will be treated with kindness. We encourage the students to treat each other with kindness as well.
L Lunch- Lunch is from 10:15 a.m.-10:45 a.m. for 3rd grade. If your child has packed a lunch please ensure that they have a lunchbox, or bag for easy transport to the cafeteria. Due to this early lunch an afternoon snack time will occur during the literacy block.
Literacy- Literacy includes reading, writing, and word study. During our literacy block we will have Daily 5 rotations, CAFÉ, and writing workshop.
M Money- In the event that you need to send in money for your child (field trips, fundraisers etc.) please send it in an envelope labeled with your child’s name, my name, and what it is for. You will receive a receipt for all monies sent to the school.
Morning Meeting- Morning meeting will begin at 8:00a.m. Morning meeting is the time of day where we will do activities such as greetings, sharing, word and number of the day; review the rules and much more.
N Newsletter- Monthly newsletters for our classroom as well as the school will be sent home in the Humphries Express.
O Open House- Please plan to attend this event to learn more about our daily classroom happenings and see your child’s work.
P Parents- You are your child’s first teacher and it is critical that we work in a partnership to help your child achieve success in 3rd grade and beyond.
Parties- We will have parties/celebrations throughout the school year. Parent participation and donations are welcomed and appreciated!
Progress Reports- Progress reports will be sent home halfway through each quarter. Review progress reports, and request a conference to discuss your child’s progress.

R Recess- Recess/Instructional Break will occur right after lunch from 10:45-11:00. If we are unable to go outside students will still receive an indoor instructional break.
Report cards- Report cards are sent home at the end of every nine week quarter.
Reading log- Weekly reading logs will be sent home along with the homework packets. Students are expected to read at home nightly and will receive 20 points for completed reading logs. If you need reading resources please contact me.
S Snack- Due to a very early lunch we will have afternoon snack, however these snacks need to be easy to eat, healthy, and not require utensils. If you want to send a drink please send bottled water, no juice. Examples of great snacks include cheese sticks, pretzels, trail mix, crackers, and fruit snacks.
T Toys- Toys are not permitted in the classroom. Toys are a distraction from the learning process; please ensure that your child is not bringing toys to school.
Transportation- You must notify me in writing if your child is not going home the way he/she usually does. For safety reasons, I cannot accept the word of your child. Without proper notification, I will send your child home his/her usual way. In order for a child to leave school with an adult, their name must be on the approved list. Make sure the person you send to pick your child up is on the list. You may go to the office and add or delete at any point in the year.
U Uniforms- Students are required to wear uniforms to school daily.
Unexcused absences- Absences without notification will be considered unexcused.
V Visiting- You are welcome to visit and volunteer in the classroom and throughout the school. Be sure to notify of your intentions to visit no later than 24 hours before you plan to come and sign in at the main office.
W Wishlist- We would appreciate any donations to our classroom wishlist.
Website- Very soon we will have a classroom website. You will be able to visit the website for classroom updates and pictures. A waiver will be sent home for permission to include your child’s picture on our website.
XYZ- I am eXcited to work with You and Your child this year! Make sure he/she gets plenty of Zzzz's each night as we have exciting days planned for this year!
